I feel this is extremely niche especially if you didn’t grow up in the late 90’s early 00’s. I really can’t expain it and I honestly don’t know how it happened but for those of us that did, dance movies sort of ruled our lives for a good 10 years and basically became our personalities.
The way that the only movies they make now are superhero films, well for us there was a glorious golden age where they only made moderately good movies about dance. And it was one of the best times of all our movie watching lives, I think we can agree, right?
Here is a pretty scientific list of the best movies about dance ever made (probably)
Dirtly Danicng
It’s going first on the list because it’s the most obvious but it’s also just really good. This in my opinion has one of the best movie soundtracks in movie history, and hoesntly a theme here that you’ll find in dance movies is that the soundtracks for me are just as iconic as the films.
Dirty Dancing 2 - Havana Nights
Hear me out…Ignore that this is called dirty dancing 2 and just imagine it has a different name. It’s nothing whatsoever to do with the original, I really think the reason why this film wasn’t bigger was because they made it part of the same family when it should be standing on its own. If we are comparing the two of them, I like this one way way better, it’s iconic to me and it’s a forever favourite. I love the leads in the main roles, the setting of Havana and the amazing soundtrack all work perfectly. If you haven’t seen this underdog of the dance world, I would definitely watch it, it’s such a perfect romance.
Save the last dance
I don’t know if i’ve ever watched a movie more in my life. I love this film so much and for a few teen years there, it was my whole personality. I can quote the lines, know every word to the phenomenal soundtrack (not even being ironic) and I watched it again a few months ago and it still holds up perfectly.
Center Stage
Another forever favourite with yet again another amazing soundtrack, this makes me want to dance so badly when I watch this, I love the dancing, the storyline and the 00’s energy. This is like a modern fame and I love everything about it.
Footloose
The original not the remake. Kevin Bacon is just cool and Kevin Bacon dancing is even cooler. Love this one a lot.
Flashdance
I feel this is another underrated classic. Another iconic soundtrack and amazing dance performances in this one too.
Honey
Did we all collectively try and dress like Jessica Alba and do our hair and makeup the same after watching this, or was that just me. She is amazing in this role, Honey is the most early 00’s film in this list, everything about it just screams we made it through the million bug and we are just all so happy lets dance, you know?
Strictly Ballroom
Another movie I have lost count of how many times i’ve rewatched it. We move into the ballroom genre of dance here and it’s everything, the drama, the australian-ness, I love it all!
Shall We Dance
Jlo dancing ballroom, Richard Gere dancing ballroom, New York and the pussycat dolls covering big band music. I don’t think have to share anymore, I think you get the idea. ICONIC
Bring it on
You thought I was going to have a dance list without one of my all time favourite films on there. The reason we all thought we could be Cheerleaders. I know the dialogue, the cheers and the dances. This movie is everything.
